Accessibility
What Nebula does today, and nothing more. We are still testing every screen with VoiceOver, so tell us what gets in your way: support@newtco.app.
Flashing light
Nebula's visuals move with the music and can flash quickly. The first time you open Nebula, a notice says so and points you to Calmer flashes.
- Settings › Display › Calmer flashes slows sudden changes and dims sudden bright flashes. Turn it all the way up if flashing lights affect you. It starts at off.
- While a Tips card is on screen, Nebula holds the flashes calm so the card is easy to read.
- Nothing in Nebula needs a quick reaction from you.
Reduced motion
When the system's Reduce Motion setting is on, windows open and close without animation, and the default scene is calmer: no beat pulse, no ripples, slow color. You can still pick any other scene.
Larger text
On iPhone and iPad the text follows the system text size (Settings › Display & Brightness › Text Size, or Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Larger Text), and the buttons and rows grow with it. On iPhone it grows to the largest of the standard sizes, then stops so the bars still fit the screen in either direction. On iPad it also follows the larger accessibility sizes. Text doesn't change size when you turn the device. On a Mac the text is a fixed size.
VoiceOver
- Buttons are named: Play, Pause, Previous, Next, Add a layer, Remove layer, Move up, Undo and so on. The previous and next buttons say Hold to scan.
- Sliders say what they are and their value. The time line is a slider named Position that reads 1:04 of 3:30, and has the actions Loop this section and Clear loop.
- Switches say On or Off. Chosen sources, tabs and settings groups are marked selected.
- A layer's show or hide button says its state. A knob group says Open or Closed.
- Locked Pro things say Needs Nebula Pro and that they open the Nebula Pro window.
- A visual with a touch dot says Responds to touch. A scene that brings music says which.
- On iPhone the Music, Scenes and Settings pages say which page you are on, such as 2 of 5.
- In Patches, each circle is named Cable from here or Cable to here. With VoiceOver, activate a source's circle, then activate a knob's circle, to connect them without dragging. The Numbers and Time sources are typed.
Touch and controls
- Controls are compact, like music gear: at the normal spacing a button or row is about 30 points tall.
- Settings › Display › Spacing makes every control taller to tap, on iPhone, iPad and Mac. At 1.5× they are about 45 points tall, the size Apple recommends for touch; it goes up to 2.5.
- Settings › Display › Window opacity: turn it to 100% for solid windows with the picture not showing through.
- Every delete takes two taps, so a stray touch can't remove anything.
- Touch on the picture is optional. A layer's Touch sensitivity can be set to 0%.
Other helps
- Press and hold (or hover over) almost any name for a short explanation.
- Nebula never records the microphone or Mac sound. See Privacy.
- The parental lock uses the device's own check (Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode).
